Lucan Luas: New Preferred Route Set to Be Revealed in 2026

20 May, 2025

After years of planning and anticipation, the Lucan Luas project is moving ahead with renewed momentum. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) has confirmed that the emerging preferred route for the new light rail line is expected to be published in early 2026 — a significant step forward in bringing enhanced public transport to one of Dublin’s busiest commuter corridors.

A Vision Taking Shape

First proposed in 2000 as part of the "Platform for Change" strategy, the Lucan Luas has long been seen as a transformative infrastructure project. Designed to improve connectivity between Lucan and Dublin's city centre, the project gained official support in 2007, when a preferred route was initially outlined.

While economic challenges in the late 2000s led to delays, the core vision never lost relevance. In recent years, the project has regained traction, with planning processes reactivated and a firm commitment now in place to finalize the new preferred route by 2026.

Planning for the Future

The Lucan Luas is a key element of the National Transport Authority’s Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2022–2042. The current plan places the Lucan line in the 2031–2036 delivery window, allowing time for careful planning, public engagement, and integration with other transport upgrades.

Once the new preferred route is published, a non-statutory public consultation will take place — giving local residents and stakeholders a valuable opportunity to have their say in shaping the project.

According to Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan, “This project will support the future growth of Dublin, offering a sustainable and efficient transport alternative for thousands of people.”

Community Engagement and Anticipation

While the project has taken time to reach this stage, the focus is now firmly on progress and participation. Many in Lucan and the surrounding areas are eager to see how the new route will improve travel times, reduce congestion, and contribute to a greener city.

Local representatives have expressed optimism that the renewed timeline signals genuine momentum. “The Lucan Luas will be a game changer — and now we’re finally seeing the pieces fall into place,” said one Dublin West TD during a recent Dáil discussion (KildareStreet.com).

A Step Closer

While challenges remain, the renewed clarity and commitment to the Lucan Luas project offer reason for optimism. With the preferred route announcement on the horizon, the project is on track to bring real benefits to Dublin’s west — from reduced emissions to shorter commutes and stronger connections.

The Lucan Luas may have taken a long road to get here, but each new development brings it closer to becoming a reality for thousands of future passengers.
