DART+ Coastal North Set to Revolutionise Commuter Life

28 Aug, 2025

On August 21st 2025, An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted the planning approval for the anticipated DART+ Coastal North project, which will extend the electrified DART network from Malahide to Drogheda. This is a significant moment for public transport in the Greater Dublin region, injecting both capacity and comfort into the commuter experience.

Scaling Up Capacity

The extension north of the DART network is expected to almost double the peak-hour potential capacity. Upon completion, the passenger capacity between Malahide and Drogheda is expected to increase from 4,800 to 8000, meaning a 43% increase. The leap in capacity will significantly reduce overcrowding and will make commuting a much more pleasant experience, increasing comfort and reducing stress on a users daily commute.

Infrastructure Upgrades for Efficiency

To achieve this capacity increase there are several enhancements that will be made to the current rail network:

  • 37km of electrification and re-signalling between Malahide and Drogheda MacBride
  • Track reconstructions and upgrades at key stations: Drogheda MacBride, Malahide, Clongriffin and Howth Junction & Donaghmede
  • A new platform at Drogheda MacBride to ease boarding flow
  • Depot modifications at both Drogheda and Fairview to support the incoming train fleet
  • A turnback facility north of Malahide that bolsters operational flexibility without encroaching on nearby residential areas

Combined, these enhancements will allow smoother operation, reduced delays and a faster, more frequent service.

New Fleet, New Features

An increase in capacity is not the upgrade that is expected. The new DART+ train fleet also promises a step-change in travel comfort and accessibility:

  • 185 new carriages are being delivered, including a majority battery-electric fleet, with service on the northern line expected by early 2026
  • Thes new trains will feature low-floor access with auto deploying steps, spacious interiors, dedicated cycle and wheelchair spaces and real-time information screens.
  • Enhanced onboard security and safety through advanced CCTV systems
  • Each 10-carriage train will carry at least 1,100 passengers. A capacity boost that aligns with the broader upgrade strategy.

What is the end result? A more reliable, comfortable and inclusive journey for all passengers whether commuting, cycling or travelling with accessibility needs.

What’s next?

With planning permission now secured Irish Rail will soon move to procure design and build contractors. This will be followed by a detailed design phase and then it proceed to construction which is expected to take approximately three years from commencement, assuming funding continues as planned.

In the meantime, passengers can look forward to early improvements  through the roll-out of battery-electric DART trains in 2026, with full electrification upgrades to come.

In Summary

The DART+ Coastal North project approval is more than infrastructure news, it is the beginning of a transformation for norther bound commuters. With a dramatic increase in capacity, enhanced frequency, modern trains and greater comfort, the expansion is set to reshape how thousands of of users will travel daily. This will reduce the reliance
